About Pennstate Abington

Never in the course of history has mental health been promoted more. Around the United States of America there are psychologists working to make the people happy, and many innovations in the fields of both technology and psychology have contributed to making the United States even more happy. One of these innovations, Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) helps to rehabilitate those with conditions like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Anxiety Disorders through ways of advanced exposure therapy. As virtual reality becomes more accessible, exposure therapy can become more available to those in need. This manor of exposure therapy allows for therapists to rehabilitate in gradual, controlled and  personalized environments to fit the patients every need.

The problem lies in Philadelphia, or rather it is not in Philadelphia. Despite Philadelphia’s size and population there are no firms or businesses that are engaging in VRET. Brave Mind has established a charity, named SoldierStrong, to fight PTSD in veterans. That being said, none of these locations are currently located in the city of Philadelphia as seen below. Other local firms exist outside of the city such as Seven Spoon Therapy and Ally Psych located in Bala Cynwyd and Doylestown respectively. However, firms like these are few and far between.

Penn State's Counseling and Psychology Services (CAPS) should integrate Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy into their program. VRET helps with many disabilities ranging from PTSD to Anxiety Disorders to even phobias. Integrating VRET can help students in need along with veterans who fought hard to protect the United States. Very few students use this resource provided to them and integrating VRET can increase the usefulness of CAPS and raise further awareness of CAPS. Additionally, CAPS has received much criticism from online accounts. Common reports include not receiving the help needed from eight separate accounts. Integrating VRET can reverse the reputation of CAPS.
